Our New Family Table

I couldn't be more proud of my husband. You see, we've had a cheaply-made, wobbly table for years now and every time we sit down to our meals each evening together, someone winds up adjusting the table so it isn't so wobbly (usually my handsome husband...ah-hem!).

 

I had hinted a year or so ago how it would be nice if we built a large farm table together as a family. Well, with a little motivation and teamwork, we were able to complete this challenge a few weeks ago and it turned out simply lovely!

 

 

The end chairs are a cool find from Goodwill ($5.00 each...steal, I know), but the dark chairs are on their way out. Our next step is to make a bench for each side.

 

Rob used pine for a basic rectangular frame underneath, then a sheet of plywood on top of the frame (no one sees that part anyway), then beautiful-smelling cedar planks for the top and small 2x2 cedar boards for the outside trim. The legs are also cedar (not stained like the top). The top got a good, smooth sanding and then a stain of "oak", then 2 coats of poly and wha-la! We're hoping to use some of the wood from our property for the benches. It's definitely been a blessing sitting down to a well-crafted table for meals and homeschool. I told him though that the bar is raising with each project he tackles. I've been hinting at bookshelves next .{grin}
