Volcano Making

To make an exploding volcano, we used some old playdough (the kind someone waited too long to put away and got hard) and shaped it into a volcano. The kids chose the paint color which was supposed to be brown, but wound up being a grayish/purplish color. We painted the volcano and then put a fan by it to dry it quicker.

We used vinegar and red food coloring to make lava.

You'll need Baking Soda to create the chemical reaction with the vinegar, hence allowing the volcano to "erupt". Then, wha-la! :)

Great idea using playdough! I made a paper mache volcano years ago when I taught earth science. I enjoyed it as much as the kids did!
