As I'm doing more research about microwaving and its effects, I found THIS ARTICLE to be very helpful. In my kitchen, I don't normally cook with a microwave. I steam our veggies on the stove. I use our oven a lot too. We do go through more pots and pans, but what's a few extra dishes compared to some of the scary things I'm reading about microWAVES. The article mentioned above gives some great advice on how to run a kitchen without using a microwave. On my next trip to Goodwill (It's addicting, I know! Why buy new when you can buy gently used and save a TON?), I think I'll look for a toasteroven to try out. The only time I use a microwave oven is when I'm heating up babyfood that's been in the fridge, or when I'm heating up leftovers. After reading this article, I think I'll revert to using my oven and stovetop.
I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but it's very dear to my heart. Rob and I lost a dear friend years ago to cancer. He had a large (I think it was 6 pounds or something) tumor in his abdomen and when he found out about it, they gave him a few months to live. He was married and had a three-year-old son at the time. They were like family to us and still are. Anyway, he did join the Lord in heaven and what I forgot to mention is that during all of this, his wife found out she had breastcancer. She went through radiation treatments, lost her hair, but remained strong through it all. Can you imagine having breast cancer, you're about to lose your husband and you have a three-year-old to explain this to?!!! It is an amazing story and the fact that "D" and her son, now 12, have remained faithful to the Lord is a great testimony.
I remember one day after things had settled down, asking her why she thought (she had done EXTENSIVE research) people got cancer. She said that our lifestyles are so different compared to how people used to live long ago. If you wanted to eat bread, you had to gather grain and make it yourself (I love The Little Red Hen book, don't you?). If you wanted fruit, you plucked it off a tree. Now we shuffle down the aisles of the grocery store and pick things off the shelf that have been there for months and have expiration dates far exceeding what food ever should. She also said that she purchased some sort of device that measured certain waves in your house. Waves that have been known to cause cancer. She tested many things/areas in her house and the microwave is what set off the most frequency in her device. Not that I'm going to go out and puchase a device, but I think that's interesting. She always kept it unplugged when not in use (it can give off waves when it's just sitting on your counter) and I'm sure she still does.
Lots to take in and consider. I think I'll try one week of not using our microwave and see if I can do it! In fact, I'll start today and go until next Friday. Tune in next week to see how the test goes.

I'm glad you found my article helpful. I originally ditched my microwave because I needed the counter space, but haven't looked back. How has your microwave-free test week gone?
