We had a really great weekend! Friday night, we had to take an IKEA trip for a new area rug in our living room. Our dog puked all over our nice, WHITE rug and needless to say, this rug has been around for three years. It's been through carpet cleaning and was located by the back door and caught lots of traffic and dirt. It was time to replace our beloved rug. Now we have a brown one that hides the dirt better.
On Saturday, we decided to take a trip to do some strawberry picking. There's a 'U-Pick' market/farm south of us and we love buying their produce as well as picking things from their fields. The kids played with the animals, enjoyed running around in the fields without the fear of getting hit by a car, played on their playground and Avonlea got very attached to a baby goat. He or she (?) was pretty cute and was definately a newborn.
Sunday, we went to church and heard an awesome message about putting on the FULL armor or God to fight the spiritual battles going on everyday in our lives. Satan loves attacking (and knows how to attack) us when we are doing the most for the Lord. I guess that's where the whole rejoicing in trials comes in. We are to rejoice through the trials because that means we're doing something to catch Satan's attention. (Ephesians 6)
I tried a new shampoo and conditioner (Aubrey's) and LOVE IT. My hair has NEVER felt so soft!! For people who have curls, you know it's hard to find a good shampoo/conditioner that encourages your curls. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (a no-no for curly hair...it weighs them down adn makes your hair frizzy) is an ingridient found in most cleaning agents from shampoo/conditioner to toothpaste to dishsoap. Anything that fizzes, look on the back and it's there. It's not the greatest for you (health-wise), so if you can find products without it, they're more natural and better for your skin and health. It is a cheap ingridient so that's why when you graze down the shampoo aisle, every product will most likely have it. That's why you can buy hand soap for under a buck.
We extended our chicken house. It's more like a chicken hotel now! We had a gift card to Home Depot and decided to enclose our butterfly house with chicken wire and place the original coop next to it with a door leading into the larger area. I'll take a photo when it's totally complete. We had some extra fence posts so we're also putting up a small fence around that area as well so that Riley can't get to our feathered friends. =) We do have room for more now, so we're signed up for a few more chicks next week. They'll be Rhode Island Reds just like the ones we have now, but they'll only be a few days old with fresh down. They will live in the garage in a laundry basket with a light for a few weeks until they're ready to join their sisters outside. I can't wait to start getting some fresh eggs!!!
Spring Garden Update:
I got my cauliflour seedlings replanted into the big garden. I planted a bunch of seeds over a week ago and placed them on our windowsill. I didn't think they'd produce since it's never been cold enough to have to start seeds indoors before, but it did! My tomatoes and lettuce are growing beautifully and I can't wait to transport them. I planted more carrots (some are already popping up) and pole beans (which I've never done before...always used regular beans). Peas are growing well, broccoli is doing incredible and we have some lettuce that will be ready to pick in the next week or so. My tomato plants died as well as sweet potatoes, beans and cucumbers. I ordered some seeds for summer squash as well as some algae (a natural, inexpensive fertalizer). Our compost is looking great too. I don't have too much since Rob hasn't had to cut the grass lately, being winter and all. I use the grass clippings for our compost as well as leaves and rotted fruits, veggies, newspaper and tea bags.
It's funny to see how our rye grass is so green compared to our neighbor's brown grass. In the winter, grass here in Florida doesn't normally get brown since we don't dip down into freezing temperatures normally. Well, this year was different. MANY things died! Including our beloved banana and mango trees. =( I loved those trees and was looking forward to some possible fruit this next year. Oh well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that maybe they will have some miraculous comeback this spring. I can dream, right?
Can you guess what this is (picture above) that I want to try?
I hope everyone enjoyed their families this weekend. I know we sure did. Now, it's back to the drawing board on Monday. I'll leave you with this...
I found Lincoln in his room jamming out to this song on his guitar the other day(the kids have a small one for them to play). Rob sings this song at home and at church. As a family, it's a song that we love cranking out in the car on trips. We call it the "Your Amazing" song and yes, our kids know all the words! Hey, it beats having to listen to Sesame Street. =)
